Have you ever had an introduction like that before? I think it gets better every year, actually. Last year was good, but this might be the best introduction I've ever had in my life. So, thank you, thank you. I've got the best introduction in my life, Andrew. That's something you need. We're so happy to have you with us today, Lando. I think a lot of people here want to hear that from you. Fun fact about you, by the way, besides being a world champion, you're also a big fan of padel. I play padel too. Yes, I do. I'm a golfer. I'm a padel player. I'm not as good at it as I am at driving, but these are some things I love to do outside of racing. They keep me active and keep me in good shape. But I try, I try to learn from the best. That's great.
Joining us today as well, of course, is Haider Rafique, the Global Managing Partner at OKX. By the way, fun fact: when he's not busy with OKX, he plays guitar, especially rock music. So, let's get started. Many talents in crypto, and of course, we have Raj Dhamodharan from Mastercard joining us. Again, when he's not busy with crypto and Mastercard, he's a professional cyclist in the Bay Area. Guys, we're so happy to have you with us. There's a lot to talk about. Lando, I want to start with you, of course. You're a world champion. Practically, what has changed now that you're a world champion? Are you more relaxed? Has it changed your daily routine?
Honestly, from a personal side, not much has changed, and that's a good thing. That's exactly what I hoped for. It's hard to predict what will happen before things actually happen. You hear a lot of things, but in a positive and proud way. Not much has changed, and I'm very happy about that. I think one of the most important things was my mentality towards what I achieved last year. Now I can go into this year with more confidence, more self-belief, and a better understanding of my ability to compete with the best. I can compete against the best, and I've proven that to myself. I've always been someone who needs to prove things to myself before I can honestly say them to myself, you know. So, amazing. To get the first win, I had to win the first race. Only then did I say to myself, okay, now I can go for pole position, all those things. So, last year was definitely a big year.
As Andrew just mentioned, you've been racing for nearly twenty years, and now you're a world champion. I even remember two years ago when you started the partnership with OKX, McLaren wasn't among the top teams. We're in a crypto bear market now, so after all these years, what advice do you have? Especially for those who have waited a long time to achieve victory. Well, in our field, you have to be patient, and I think patience is sometimes hard in crypto because you see the results right in front of you, live. Yes, you have to be patient. Sometimes it's about playing the long game, and you can't win every day, and maybe it's the same in crypto. You can't win every day, and I don't think you should expect to. You have to set realistic goals, short-term and long-term.
This year, for example, we're not winning, so winning for us this weekend doesn't mean first place. It might mean finishing fifth or third or getting on the podium. So, setting realistic goals every day and every year is important. It probably intersects with accepting that you won't always be perfect, you won't always win, and realizing that others might do a better job sometimes. Yeah, you might lose. That's a big part of it.
Speaking of patience and perseverance, when you look at athletes around the world, is there any athlete in other disciplines, whether in driving or any other sport, that you admire for their focus and patience? I mean, there are many. From the tennis side, I'm good friends with some tennis players, like Yannick or Carlos Zverev. They're great guys I've gotten to know well. You slowly start to understand how they think, what their mentality is every day. Is all they think about work? There's a balance, and you have to understand how to balance work and life, and enjoyment and fun. Golfers, too. Over the years, I've had the chance to meet golfers, meet Rory again, and understand how they think about things, what they say to themselves every day.
For me, I was never the person who, as I just said, wakes up and says, today I'm going to win everything. I always had to go out and prove it to myself. So, seeing others who have this opposite mentality, who say, I'm going to wake up and today is my day, today I'm going to be the best, that's something that's always interested me because it's not something I really had, and I had to work on it and learn about it. So, learning about that from others has been great for me, and I love meeting new athletes and all the stars, and knowing how they became who they are.
You're a big golfer, as mentioned. What's a course you'd like to play that you haven't yet? I've been lucky. I've played some of the best courses. My favorite is Augusta National. Yes, I'm a lucky person. I've played there a few times with Zak, my boss. Yes, I have to let him win every time. But I'm lucky to meet great people, travel around the world, and get introduced to amazing people. So, I'm in a very privileged position to do these kinds of things, but there are a few. I think in America and in Vegas, there are some Tiger Woods courses I've never played that I need to play at some point.
What about golf simulators? Are you interested in golf simulators? Not really. I love simulators for racing. I grew up playing on simulators at home. I remember starting maybe when I was... I mean, my life started playing Gran Turismo on PlayStation. My dad had a wheel and pedals I had to put on the table when I was about four years old. Yes, and I couldn't beat my dad using the controller. One day I thought I'd try connecting the wheel and pedals and see how it goes. I had no idea about driving or anything like that. The first time I beat my dad in a race was when I used the simulator and pedals. So, when I was four, that was my first sign, even though I didn't realize it then, maybe the first clue that I was really good at this.
I play golf simulators a bit. Actually, there are two here. So, I go with my team because I don't want them to mess up the golf courses. So, I have to take them to... But to practice a bit, have a fun day, and sometimes I go with my friends, but simulators are great. Anything where you can practice the real thing, I think, is good, whether that's maybe with crypto and having a demo account, where you can practice, learn, make mistakes, and learn from them. It's the same with driving and golf. You learn what your bad and good turns are, what you're doing wrong in your driving, and you can learn. So, I think it's one of the best ways to feel like it's real while being able to practice the real thing. For me, that's a really valuable insight.
You mentioned crypto, Haider. I want to bring you in. In 2022, you decided to sponsor McLaren. At that time, McLaren wasn't the leading team we see today. What role did the partnership with McLaren play in the OKX brand? You've done a great job in the last two years. Thank you. So, 2022 feels like a long time ago. At that time, the company was known as OKCoin or OKX. We had some brand fragmentation. The reason we did the McLaren deal and some of our other big partnerships is because we had just rebranded the company to OKX. I think that was in February 2022, and we needed a very big distribution platform, so we were looking at sports teams, and we were looking at entertainment. The thing that attracted us to Formula 1, and I'll tell you why McLaren specifically, is that Formula 1 is the only sport that goes around the world. I think it's about 24 races in 22 markets, if I'm not mistaken. You can't get that reach with any other entity.
As a marketing director, I never believed in buying ads. I think it's a cheap way to do marketing. Tying yourself to emotions is a better way to build a brand, and when you get that with a big distribution platform, that's where the magic happens. So, you know, in 2022, no one really knew what OKX was, no one knew the logo, and thanks to McLaren, Formula 1, and some of the other investments we made, we achieved incredible brand velocity. I think 2022 was the first year we sponsored TOKEN2049, and since then, we've been sponsoring this event. So, McLaren was interesting because we talked to a number of teams at the time. Red Bull was doing very well, and there was Mercedes, but McLaren, and I believe this as a fan, and like... I played Gran Turismo and Grand Theft Auto. Yeah, but McLaren. I remember growing up, McLaren had this amazing heritage from Senna to the newer drivers like David Coulthard, Montoya, Mika, all those were great drivers, and I just feel in life, whether in trading, buying real estate, investing in a sports team, or in yourself, you have to look for assets that have a lot of intrinsic value and maybe aren't trading at a high price, because that gives you a really good entry point. So, we were able to negotiate an incredible deal for OKX, and then we were able to ride the wave of the winning strategy.
We knew Zak was doing an amazing job investing in the right drivers, Lando was coming up and performing very well, and then he ended up bringing Oscar to the team. So, look, here we are. I'll tell you, the idea that you can look at data and know how to achieve explosive growth for founders or people working on projects is a misconception. You have to follow your gut, you have to take bold risks and make decisive decisions. Yes, and that ultimately leads to the right results. From midfield to world championship, it would be great to see those days we spent playing Grand Theft Auto pay off.
Mastercard
Raja, from your perspective, what benefit has Mastercard gained from such a partnership? Of course, everyone knows Mastercard as a brand, so what's the benefit of this association with McLaren? Yes, look, thank you. It's really great to be with both McLaren and OKX, two great companies. We're working on a variety of things. Mastercard started a partnership with McLaren a few years ago, and in the last two years, we've become the main sponsor. It's now the Mastercard McLaren team. It's really great to see the logo and also see the passion and everything come together on and off the field for the fans. For us, it comes down to a few things. The first is really focusing on innovation. Mastercard has spent decades innovating and making things easier for people in terms of speed and performance, putting technology first. I started to describe how McLaren works, right? They often innovate in every aspect of technology. I still remember the first time I walked into the garage and saw what people do to reach their goal. Zak describes the number of sensors, how we do it. All of this is focused on performance. And if you look at what we do, it's about providing a simple experience for consumers around the world. Billions of cards, millions of locations, a simple tap, and all the magic happens behind the scenes. That focus on a really simple experience is great. And the second thing is: priceless, the passion that this brand carries, connecting people to what matters to them.
Yes, and Formula 1 is one of the fastest-growing sports, and McLaren is one of the fastest-growing brands, with great accessibility. It's a perfect combination, yeah. So, every market we enter—let's mention how many markets McLaren is in. We're in those markets and more. And we can bring that exciting experience to fans with our best technology. It's been a great partnership with the team. It's great, especially on the innovation side.
I think a lot of people who don't follow racing regularly don't realize how much innovation there is in Formula 1. It's really at the forefront of development, and the teams are behind that. Are you surprised by all this innovation happening in Formula 1? I mean, it's great to be a small part of it. Like, I can give hints about what we need to improve, so I think we have upgrades, and we also have innovations.
There are a lot of things Formula 1 innovates because of competitiveness, which have moved to other parts of the world, and a lot of what Formula 1 has done over the last twenty years, you now see in the regular cars you drive every day. I remember McLaren made the first carbon fiber chassis for a road car ever, and now there are many road-legal race cars and high-performance cars around the world that rely entirely on carbon fiber. So, a lot of things started in racing and moved to the general public. Whether from a safety or performance perspective, being part of this circle is really special and amazing.
But from our performance side, we try to improve the car every weekend, and that could be trying to gain a tenth of a second, which might not sound like much—a tenth. If you told me the car is a tenth faster this week, I'd be very happy. Time to celebrate. That's a good and important upgrade. So we're talking about tenths, hundredths, and thousandths of a second. And is this how we can improve every part of the car? How do we put together every little piece to find ten or fifteen things that each give a hundredth of a second, and in the end, you find you've gained a tenth and a half.
So it's really about finding the small things and finding... the things others aren't looking at: discovering areas or, yeah, areas that haven't been explored yet, and hopefully things others haven't looked into yet, so you can try to improve and get ahead of your competitors. So, it's a constant drive, and if you relax even for one weekend, your competitors will overtake you. So, it's a relentless drive, and I think that's what makes it so exciting. It's kind of like crypto from that perspective.
I've always wondered, Lando, as Formula 1 drivers, when you drive a regular car on a regular street with a speed limit, how do you deal with it? I mean, it must be... It's scary. Yeah, yeah, scary. Um, as I was saying, I feel more scared driving on the road than I do in a race car. I'm more scared, and I think that's right, because there are some people who shouldn't have a driver's license in the first place. And also, I mean, you have, yeah, no comment. And you have cars coming from the other direction. You know, I'm with twenty, twenty-one of the best drivers in the world. When you're on the road, you're not necessarily surrounded by twenty-one of the best drivers in the world. So, we're all going in the same direction, and we all know the limits. On the road, it's much more dangerous. So, I'm really more scared.
But I, I lose my patience, actually. I flash my headlights to let someone know if they're in the fast lane when they shouldn't be. I'll point at them when I pass them. What's your view as an F1 driver on self-driving cars? Do you think the art of driving will be lost? As long as they don't take my job, I'm happy. No, but I mean, I love driving cars. I'm a car lover, so I love the smell, the sound, the feel. I love historic and classic cars because you get more authenticity, all that. Even in Formula 1 now, you know, innovation is coming, and everything is becoming electric and things I'm not the biggest fan of compared to V10 engines, V8s that Formula 1 used to use, but there are other ways to innovate. Some of that is through fuel. We could go back to V8s and V10s if we used synthetic fuel and biofuel and so on, to bring back some of that authenticity and raw power we used to have.
But there are also a lot of positives for self-driving cars, and you see them more and more around the world, especially in America. Yeah, and that's great for a lot of people, but of course for drivers, it's not a good thing. So, yeah, there's a market for that, but I think Formula 1 is great because you can connect with people. You can connect with us, our drivers, you can see mistakes, you can see, you can connect, you can... yeah. You can feel the connection, and I think that's something you always feel in sports in general, so I think it's an area automation will never fully take over.
You're talking about connection. Obviously, you have great fans in this room, and Formula 1 has achieved that—it's a very glamorous sport. In your daily life, what's the unglamorous side that people think is glamorous from the outside? Besides speaking at crypto events—no, I mean, it's great that I have the chance to explore things outside my usual work. My whole life has been about racing and cars, and I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything. I think the advantage is that I get to meet people like these, attend events like this, and at least start learning different things, which is good for me, because when I was younger, I wasn't really someone who explored different areas. I love racing. My whole life, my whole childhood was about how to become a racing driver. So now, being at this stage, after seven years in Formula 1, I've finally started to appreciate things outside of that, and I finally feel a desire to learn more beyond the life I was stuck in, which is great.
So, I'm very happy to be here and to witness other things. But the thing I don't enjoy much is probably having the camera on you all the time. Don't take it personally, but you lose a bit of privacy in your life. Don't you think? You lose a bit of the freedom to say, I'll go out with some friends and have a good time, because you know there's always someone watching with a camera, and it'll end up on social media the next day, so you can never make a fool of yourself or do those things, but I'm still trying to balance it well. I still want to go out and feel like a normal person. I still want to go out just to be with my friends, have a good time, throw a party, or whatever it might be. And sometimes I forget there's a camera on me, so yeah, I've made a few mistakes, but that's the downside of Formula 1, but in a positive way because you have fans and supporters, you have kids growing up looking up to you as a role model, and I think that's one of the most special things I carry, which is a responsibility to that generation because I was in their place once—when I was younger, seeing Lewis or Seb or Fernando or whoever, they're the people I'm still racing against now. So, for me to think I was in their place and now there are kids looking at me in that same way, that's a very special feeling.
What advice would Lando in his twenties give to young Lando, who started racing at six or seven? What would I say? I think one of the things we touched on is believing in yourself, because I was someone who always felt I had to prove myself. I set my own standards very high and was often disappointed with my personal performance, which was good growing up because I was never satisfied and always wanted to improve. But at some point, it's good to acknowledge what you achieve. I think self-satisfaction is sometimes good. Praising yourself and knowing when you do a good job is great. I've always been able, especially over the last two years, to understand when I'm doing a good job and when I need to work on improving myself, and having a good team around me to help improve my performance. If I could go back and tell my younger self, I'd say: trust your abilities more, because that gives you comfort. This year I can go into qualifying and races feeling less prepared in theory, but with more confidence that I'll go out and do the job I know I can do. Last year I was asking myself too many questions, way too many, and that makes you overthink and spiral in your mind. Questions are good but only to a point; in the end, you have to trust your abilities no matter the field and realize you're here for a reason and you'll go out and do a good job.
