Wow, well, it's really fun for me to be here with you on the stage at Token. And I guess my first question, and what I think people are probably wondering, is, you know, you pivoted your NBA career. Being a champion, 14 seasons, to be in this space full time.
So I guess just to start, why? Well, first of all, it's the future of finance, right? And I think it's an area where, for most athletes, celebrities, and entertainers, you know, it's the one area where we have a lack of education and haven't been taught the fundamentals. I think finance is the only area where you have to trust a complete stranger, which is a ridiculous thought process. I mean, think about the car you buy, the person if you have the chance to get married, the school you go to, it's kind of your choice. But with finance, you got to put a lot of trust in something that you've worked and built up and to hand to somebody else.
And like, you know, you hear all the horror stories, which is—Sad. And so for myself, it's like, why not be a Black Panther in space and teach the literacy, but then also put people on opportunities prior to being late to the party.
So, speaking of putting people on, what was your introduction to crypto? How did you first find out about it? A buddy of mine, it was his wife's birthday, and a friend of ours in L.A. was like, Hey. Take a thousand dollars, open a Phantom wallet, and buy this token. So he takes a thousand dollars, he buys the token, goes to dinner, comes back home, it goes from a thousand dollars to 50 grand. It was Book of Meme, so all you guys know about that. So he calls me, he's like, Tristan, I'm up 50 grand. I said, What? I said, What is this? I said, Are you rugging somebody? What's going on? He's like, No, man.
This is on-chain because prior to that, we actually threw a party in New York with Dolce & Gabbana and Inbetweeners for NFT NYC. So we saw how many people were in the NFT space came to the event that we threw. So I was like, okay, cool, cool. So now we pivoted to crypto now. So now he's up 50 grand. He's not sleeping. He has bags under his eyes. And I said, brother, what's going on? So now he's also buying. Some other meme coins like the Waka Flocka, and he's buying a bunch of other meme coins. Obviously those go up and those crash. But I said, okay, this is something interesting here. Let me start doing my deep dive on it, right? If my friend can, you know, 50x his money very quickly, there's got to be something here.
So, very fortunate to know a couple friends of mine from LA. Olaf, obviously one of the early Coinbase employees, and then Ryan Fang, who was a co-founder of ANKR, who was a Cal Berkeley guy, only guy in San Fran that was rooting for the Cavs in 2016, by the way. So sorry for this long reason, but then started asking them questions. And then after that got orange-pilled. That's why my iPhone case is orange, and started to get into the Matrix, fell in love with this space and realized there's something here special. And I wanted to be part of this journey.
So I read that you actually hired tutors and sat through three-hour sessions to learn about crypto. I'm curious, what was the most exciting thing you learned during those sessions? Yeah, well, guess what? My tutors were actually based in Singapore. There were three gentlemen. They were based in Singapore. So the time difference was nuts. I think I was doing classes around 8 p.m. till about midnight every day because it was daytime for them. And we learned from, like, you know, what is an L1, what's an L2, what's DeFi, you know, leverage trading.
I wanted to learn the entire thing, you know, the entire space, because the way I look at it is this: if I'm going to teach my peers and have them understand, I have to know basically from the foundation all the way up. Because I don't want to skip steps, and I also don't want to give people bad advice, right? Because at the end of the day, I take my word, you know, with high regards. And the last thing I want to do is put my friends or peers in a situation where I can't, you know, help them or save them from the red flags. So that's what happened. It's been fun, especially when I talk to people and tell them what I do on-chain.
It's like I have a lot of real degen in me. Like I either go from like—Investing to all the way LP pooling on like Meteora and leveraging on Arkis just to get ready for the farm and airdrops.
So a lot of celebrities got introduced to crypto during the NFT moment, and then a lot left the space after that. But you've stayed, and it seems like you're really interested in the finance and investing side. Beyond some kind of quick pop. So I'm curious, as an investor, what you'd like to see built in the space that isn't here yet. Like, what do you imagine people should be solving for? I mean, I think that the key is just to make good products, right? I think we got to step away from saying, hey, I'm making a crypto project. I think it's like Uber or Lyft or any of these applications, right? We don't know under the hood if it's AWS or it's cloud.
The fact, if I call an Uber or I call over here, I think it's called Grab, if I put my location, pick me up and take me to where I go. I don't care what technology is used under the hood, just get me there. And I think for crypto, what we're seeing right now, especially with the RWAs, it's pegging, you know, meme coins to pre-IPO stocks, right? I think that's a good way to get retail to understand and come on chain. So I think that's kind of the—The next step, what excites me as an investor or being in the space.
Well, there's also an emerging connection between sports, which obviously is your métier for most of your life so far, and crypto, which is prediction markets, sports betting. And so the question I have for you about that, I mean, the big sports books keep seven to nine cents out of every dollar that's spent. And right now, regulators in Massachusetts have found that a lot of the players that tend to win in that sports betting arena tend to get booted off the platforms. With prediction markets on-chain, there's an opportunity to do something different that benefits the user more. What do you think about that? Are you excited about prediction markets and that opportunity? Yeah, no, I love prediction markets.
對,我覺得,還有一點我也很喜歡,就是讓年輕人也能自己創建獎金池,對吧?I mean, what Shane's doing at Polymarket and what Tarek's doing at Kalshi, I think is disrupting the space. Two great founders, two good buddies of mine that have really figured out how to disrupt the space. I think the traditional sportsbook and going to Vegas, I mean, you see the casinos, they're dying and they're becoming dead. And I think what they've done is Preyed on people and taking advantage, like you said, the amount of money they make on top of everything, where now with prediction markets, we can set the pool. The vig, right? The vig on all those things. Yeah, and I think, you know, being able—you know, what I even like as well is being able for young people to create their own pools, right?
我昨天跟我朋友Alexis(他是Reddit的創辦人)坐在一起時才知道這個數據。 Like, who's going to be the next valedictorian at our high school, right? Like those things where I think it doesn't have to be so much the professional level where you can even bring it to the—To the micro, right? To the smaller bets where it's in the community, where it's making fun and exciting. But I think it also helps sports prediction markets. It helps fan engagement, right? Because if you notice that, I think 40% of the prediction market space are women, in terms of people that are participating. I actually got that stat yesterday when I was sitting with my buddy Alexis, who started Reddit. He said that 40% of the bettors are women, which helps us as men. So when we're sitting watching NFL Sundays, our wives are not complaining now. They're actually joining us in these bets. So it's been good.
Well, prediction markets and just sports betting generally are completely popping off, and it seems like that's what young people want to do with their time. As a player, and with these small markets forming, are you concerned at all that people with the ability to affect the markets are playing in them? No, you know what I love about this is that this is an opportunity where I think we give way too much credit and listen, you know, to the words of the sports broadcasters that sit on the big networks. Where I truly believe there are young people on X, on social media, that actually know the game better.
And I think this is an opportunity where if a prediction market platform can add a bigger social layer to it, very similar to what FOMO and Pump are trying to do, where you kind of, instead of you having to track a wallet to see who the star is. You create a social layer to it. So imagine now Prediction Market platform, you can see who has the biggest P&Ls, where now these guys can actually have a voice and go on livestream and give their opinion on why they think this team is so great, instead of having to watch, you know, the people that sit on Fox, ESPN, or on this side of the world, I guess it's Sky or BBC. Some of my most data-driven trader friends are now analyzing everything about players' stats, injuries, are they in or out of the game. So it's been really fun to watch that.
所以我認為,如果你看看我們這個領域裡的一些偉大人物和企業家,我覺得地球上最有影響力的人就是Elon Musk,對吧?You've written that athletes should be owners and builders rather than ambassadors, and you've been both in this space at various points. I'm curious. What kind of deal would you never sign again, and what kind of deal are you looking for? Yeah, I think for me now, and I think for everyone, we should always push the limit to gain more ownership, right, and be less of, like, selling this bathwater and actually just being an operator and owner of it, right? So I think if you look at some of the greats. Business and entrepreneurs that we have in our space, you know, I think the number one influencer on planet Earth is Elon Musk, right?
Because not only is he leveraging his NIL, he's also in the weed of things, and he's also part of the growth of the company, right? And I think that's, you know, if you looked at 20 years ago, most founders would never go on TV and do a media run. But now you even have Jeff Bezos coming out of retirement, starting Prometheus, going there talking about what he's trying to do with physical AI, right? Which I also invested, because I think I'll be very good if he can own 30% of the physical AI space. But I think it's more of owning what you're part of and not just having somebody show pony you around.
I'm curious, you know, you mentioned AI. How do you see AI transforming the sports world? Well, I think for, I think live sports and human interaction, something like this, right? I think... AI can never replace. No matter how much we want to sit on a Zoom call and talk amongst each other, there's nothing of this in-person interaction and feeling the energy. So I think for sports, it's the one area. That's why you notice a lot of private equity and family offices are trying to get exposure into the sports world or into, you know, live human interaction, because that's the one area that it doesn't matter.
You know, outside of the, you know, Chinese Olympics with the robots, nobody wants to see 18 robots get a hole in one on a golf course, or see a bunch of robots jumping 10 feet to dunk the basketball. It's still humans being able to watch the 1% of the 1% do something that most humans can't. It's still something that has your jaw dropping.
You've also talked a lot about your interest in AI for health. And written about your brother Amari. Maybe you can talk to us about what that means to you and how you've been thinking about AI and health going together. Yeah, well, I think, you know, everyone's—I mean, I own a liquor company, so obviously you see the numbers are down on liquor sales. People are drinking less alcohol and drinking more matchas and coffees and lattes. Which I am one of those. I had four lattes yesterday, but I— Four lattes? Yeah, I had four. I was rolling. It was a long— Did you sleep okay? Oh, I can fall asleep very easily. In one minute, I can knock out.
Function Health。But I think for— You monitor your resting heart rate? Oh yeah, I have my Whoop, so yeah, I have to. But no, I think health data on-chain, I think, is very important, especially because of what I went through, our family experience with my brother who has epilepsy. Being able—Trying to get access for your health data right now, calling hospitals, calling your doctors. For some reason, I feel like doctors take the most holidays I've ever experienced in my life. So getting a hold of your health records, especially if you're international, it's one of the most challenging things. So being able to have that in the palm of your hands, I think there's a company called Function Health.
They're doing a good job with that, keeping your information in the palm of your hands, because I know. You know, when someone gets a cough right now, you'll go on WebMD and they'll tell you you have pneumonia, right? Like, we need, you need AI to kind of be tailor-made to who you are, right? Because what makes me sick or what I'm coughing could be different than what you're coughing about, right? So I think it's important that the AI now is kind of like creating your own physician. And I think that's the next wave, especially because Everyone's big on this health, look at maxing, and we're all trying to make as much money as we can. We might as well live a more healthier life so we can enjoy the fruits of our labor.
Are you also investing in that space? Of course. I think it's a big thing. It's a big narrative right now. You see a lot of countries and sovereign funds backing longevity. If you see in the Middle East, in the UAE, in Abu Dhabi, they're pushing, especially in Dubai as well. So you understand that this is a sector that's very early. I mean, even look at peptides, right? Right now, it's such a gray space where people are buying peptides from, like, their local trainer that has no credibility. You don't know if it's contaminated or what's going into it. You just want to look good. So I think this is an area that is still early, where if you're an investor, you got to give it a look.
Do you experiment at all with these things with yourself? Do you consider yourself a biohacker at all? Of course. I mean, listen, I think probably 80% of us here either, you know, might have tried a peptide, looked into a GLP, looked into a Wolverine stack pack, something, right? So, I mean, listen, I'll be honest. I want to look good for as long as I can and feeling great, especially with the wear and tear on these knees. So whatever I could do to keep myself sitting upright and moving and grooving and keeping up with the young DJs, I'm all for it.
Last question for this audience: what can they expect to see from you in this space over the next year or two? I mean, I think right now it's just continue being part of a, you know, a great narrative. I think, like you said, health is a big thing. Health data on-chain is great, I think. Positioning more people to want to become owners and operators. I think, especially with pairing, you know, I'm very bullish on the fact that we're pairing, you know, meme coins to pre-IPO stocks. I mean, I did buy, I don't know how many people are on Chain or bought. Butthole, and it gives you anthropic pre-IPO. So obviously we know that's going to be rinse and repeat with OpenAI, probably Stripe, probably Anduril. So I think that's a great way to bring more retail capital on-chain. So that's something I'm excited about.
這是很棒的結尾,謝謝大家!I feel like crypto has really educated a whole generation about finance, if nothing else, and you've been part of that. Yeah, you can't get this in business school. You know, business school is going to teach you, you know, the micro macros, but—I think, you know, human interaction and being on chain, I think it's the best teacher. Experience. The best way you're gonna learn how to save your money is maybe over-leveraging a hype long and getting liquid. It's the best way to learn. I think that's a beautiful note to close on. Thank you so much. Appreciate it, guys. Thank you.
